Under a Watchful Eye ---- Today we are again in the centre of Beijing , standing in Tiananmen Square and looking at the Gate of Heavenly Peace , which marks an entrance to the Forbidden City. The gate was built in the 15th century and restored in the 17th , and was formerly the largest of the four gates of the Imperial Wall which surrounded the imperial grounds . The gate is divided into five doors reached via seven bridges spanning a stream . Each of these bridges was restricted in its use and only the emperor could use the central door and bridge . Today the red communist flags are flying proudly in the breeze and a portrait of Chairman Mao overlooks the traffic . To the left of Mao's portrait runs the slogan "Long live the People's Republic of China" and to the right "Long live the unity of the peoples of the world" . The portrait was famously pelted with paint filled eggs during the 1989 demonstrations in the square , but a number of spares of the portrait exist and a fresh replacement one was rapidly put up . The bicycle is probably just as much a national symbol as any of the flags or portraits , and I waited for a suitable subject to move into the frame before taking this picture . Owing to various fences and security , I could not move any closer and had to make so with the white fence in the foreground .

“警觉的目光下”---- 我们又来到了北京的中心，站在宽阔的广场上，眺望着紫禁城的大门 --- 天安门。

天安门城楼始建于15世纪，重建于17世纪，是进入红墙环绕的紫禁城的四个城门中最宏伟者。 城楼有五个门洞，门洞前及两侧共有七座石桥跨越城楼下的金水河。 当年朝廷大臣出入紫禁城要严格按照官位等级通过不同的石桥和门洞，位于中央的石桥和大门专供皇上使用。

今天，共产党的旗帜在天安门上自豪地随风飘扬，毛的目光一丝不苟地注视着下面过往的行人与车辆。 画像两侧分别是写着“中华人民共和国万岁”和“世界人民大团结万岁”口号的牌匾。 毛的画像曾在1989年那场著名的风波中被示威人群用投掷的颜料和鸡蛋所污损，但当局很快便以备用的画像予与替代。

自行车如同红旗和毛的画像一样，是这个国家的特色之一。 拍这张照片前，我一直在设法寻找一个更理想的画面，但由于围栏的阻隔及对交通安全的考虑，只能在较远的位置拍下这张包括广场围栏的照片。

“Here’s looking at you . ” ---- Although there are sweeping changes going on in China , there is always evidence of the old regime , the guards are everywhere , however it makes a good spectacle for the tourists , in the streets of Beijing there is also a lot of police & you feel safe because of this , good or bad , you decide ? This was taken during the changing of the guard in the Forbidden City .

“ 这儿盯着你呢 ！”---- 尽管中国已发生了巨大的变化，但仍随处可见其严格控制下的社会特征。 街道上大量的警察给外国旅游者带来一定的安全感，斯情斯景，仁者见仁。此片摄于天安门护卫队换岗时。

Turn To Mao ---- The Mao Zedunh mausoleum and memorial hall was built right in the center of Tiananmen Square — the center of Beijing and metaphorically of the whole of China ; shortly after Mao's death in 1976 . For nearly thirty years he was the center of the Chinese universe , and however the future judges him he is certainly still revered today. The queues that file into the building and pass his glass sarcophagus are long but fast moving , and visitors often get the feeling they are being whisked away before they can get a good look at the mummified corpse . Admission is free .

“瞻仰毛遗体”---- 天安门广场不仅是北京市的中心，也在政治上代表着全中国的中心。 1976年毛去世后不久为他修建的纪念堂位于广场的中央。

近三十年中，毛曾是中国的神。 无论历史对其作出怎样的评价，今天他依然受到中国人的崇拜。

参观纪念堂的队伍通常总是排得很长，不过前进得并不慢。 人们被督促着快速走过毛的水晶棺，往往来不及仔细观看。 门票免费。

Not very free press ---- A magazine vendor sells a large variety of publications from a kiosk in western Beijing . China has angered international rights groups and media organisations with its new curbs on foreign journalists and news agencies . Authorities have announced ‘rules’ requiring foreign media to get the approval of the government news agency , Xinhua , before releasing or distributing any news reports , pictures and graphics within China . The new rules empower Xinhua to censor and/or delete any content that it sees as a ‘threat’ to national security and unity .

Street mess ---- This is not the most crowded street in Beijing . Not a weekend , not a rush hour . This is Beijing’s daily life , I see it exactly this way , a bit in a blur which I added in Photoshop . Cars , bikes , people – usual street chaos in this overpopulated city. Don’t forget to take your cells and wallets out of your back pockets before coming to China .

“繁杂街景”---- 这里既不是北京最繁华的大街，也不是周末，更不是高峰时，这是北京普通的一天。这座人口爆炸的城市街道上永远拥塞着人群、自行车和汽车。 到这里旅游要小心你的钱包和手机。

" 4 ... 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... go ! " ---- Many many bicycles in Beijing . The people from various jobs , police , office man , kid , girl , maid , etc .... Everyone hurried up to go . It seemed they were in race . I took it while I was in bus .

“一，二，三，走着！”---- 北京有数不尽的自行车，无论警察、职员、孩子、姑娘、保姆，人人都骑着车行色匆匆，好像这里总在举行骑车比赛。 这是我在公交车上拍到的一幕。

Easy parking ---- Again , bicycles , in any case I am in China , the known country for them ...... And for the red of the Forbidden City walls . Here a bit of both , in one street near the walls of the Forbidden City . Compared with the cars , bycicles are still the easiest means of transportation to park along the city !

“方便的停车处”---- 在中国，随处可见的自行车如同紫禁城的红墙，举世闻名。 上面图中，红墙与自行车相映成趣。 与汽车相比，北京的自行车仍是便于停放的交通工具。

All over Beijing , one was reminded of the upcoming Olympic games before Aug 2008 . By the signs, advertisements and souvenir shops . But also by the bulldozers and cranes leveling the old in favor of the new.....

随着2008年8月的临近，北京街头的一切，从标语、广告、礼品店到粉刷一新的推土机、起重机，时时处处都在提醒着人们奥运会即将召开。

Cleaning beijing . ---- I have seen this trike and the woman in orange on Tian'anmen-Square at the side of the monument of the people's heroes. I remember Beijing as a clean city.

城市保洁 ---- 我在天安门广场的人民英雄纪念碑旁遇到这个身着橙色工装、骑着三轮车的环卫女工。 在我印象里，北京是座整洁的城市。

When touring Beijing , some of the main roads were closed for construction , the tour bus where I was riding had to make a detour through some smaller streets . A nice detour for me to see more street scenes of Beijing .

北京有些主路因施工被临时禁行，但我所乘坐的旅游车绕行一些小街时却使我看到了许多生动的景色。

A scene of everyday life in a small side-street ( Hutong ) of Beijing ---- Hutongs are narrow streets or alleys , most commonly associated with Beijing . Here , Hutongs are alleys formed by lines of siheyuan , traditional courtyard residences . Many neighbourhoods were formed by joining one siheyuan to another to form a Hutong , and then joining one Hutong to another. In old China , streets and lanes were defined by width . Hutongs were lanes no wider than 9 metres . Many are smaller ; Beijing Hutongs range in width from 10 metres down to only 40 centimetres . Since the mid-20th century, the number of Beijing Hutongs has dropped dramatically as they are demolished to make way for new roads and buildings . More recently , some Hutongs have been designated as protected areas in an attempt to preserve this aspect of Chinese cultural history.

“北京胡同的日常生活”---- 胡同是北京人对小巷的称呼，它们体现着这个城市中最平凡的一面。

胡同由一排排传统的庭院式建筑 --- 四合院所构成，往往一座四合院的前面属于某条胡同，而背面又属于相邻的另一条胡同。

古时的中国对于街道和小巷有着严格的界定。 胡同是指宽度不大于九米的小巷，许多小巷实际要更窄。 北京的胡同宽度从十米到甚至四十公分不等。

二十世纪五十年代起，为修建楼房和道路，北京拆除了大量的胡同。 直到近几年，一些胡同方被政府定为传统文化保护地点从而得以留存。

This picture was taken when I was riding a pedicab. I took it with a very high speed . It was a really lucky shoot . The place was the Hutongs in Beijing . Thats real China life .....

Vibrant Hutong life ---- Beijing's Hutongs, alleys, are full of life and stories to discover. Siheyuans ( courtyards ), duyuans ( independent yards ) along the alleys have multiple forms , styles , not forgetting the interesting personalities habiting them .

“生机盎然的胡同”---- 北京的胡同充满着生活情趣，各式各样的门窗装点着一座座不同格局的四合院和独门小院，这里人们的习性更加令人难忘。

One Child Policy ---- One thing you very rarely see in Chinese cities is more than one child with an adult . The one-child policy was introduced in the early 1980s , so the large majority of people under about 20 do not have brothers or sisters . Contrary to a lot of (foreigners) ideas , it is permitted to have more than one child , but you have to pay a series of fines which make it prohibitively expensive for most people . So this is the result : a mother walking in downtown Beijing with (probably) her only child .

独生子女政策 ---- 在中国所有的城市里，你很难看到一个家长身边能有两个或两个以上的孩子。 独生子女政策始于二十世纪八十年代，这让今天绝大多数二十来岁的年轻人都没有兄弟姐妹。 更使西方人难以理解的是，生养第二个孩子并非绝对禁止，但你要为此不断支付数不胜数、令人无法承受的各项罚款。

于是，随处可见上述情景：北京的一条街道上，走着一位母亲和她唯一的女儿。

Beijing child ---- This little girl really thought I look funny , especially when she saw me with the big camera in front of my face. And then , when she saw my huge , big , extremely large feet , she lauged even more . ( I have a size 38 , european shoe-size , not very big here in Europe , but in China they thought our feet were scary :) )

北京的孩子 ---- 这个小丫头见我的大相机遮住了我的脸，认为非常搞笑。 而再往下看到我的大脚时，她更加乐不可支。（ 我穿38码的鞋，这在西方很正常，但在中国，这算大脚丫子。:) ）

Twins ---- It is common in China to dress your children up and take their picture . These two in Beihai Park , were getting increasingly frustrated with their father who insisted on taking lots of pictures of them in the baking heat . You can just see the frustration on their little faces .

“双胞胎”---- 中国人喜欢给孩子们化妆照相。 北海公园里，酷暑中，为爹的正照得兴起，欲罢不能，两个小女儿早已是一脸的忍无可忍。

A boy was hiding from his Mom in a usual beijing resident community. Suddenly he got leak ......

Diapers ? why ? ---- I saw many of these in China . Is that why they have those toilets on the ground .

尿不湿呢？ 为什么不用？ ---- 幼儿随地大小便在这里很常见。

Beijing kids ---- I keep in thought that the kids in Beijing are a little deffrent from other place . They are open mind and easy to make a friend . Look at this little girl , she was going into a retail section to buy two bottle of beer for her father when I took pics of the Hutong . But when she went out of the shop , she faced my camera like this . That made me laugh and even hardly held on my camera , so that I have missed a photo of her look like taken by a master.

北京的孩子们 ---- 在我的印象中，北京的孩子们很有特点，大方、好客。 照片上的这个小女孩刚从一家小铺给她爸爸买啤酒出来，她的样子让我忍俊不禁，几乎拿不稳相机，匆忙中拍下了这个镜头。

Little handsome . ---- He did notice me taking his photos but eventually didnt bother about me . Especially liked his cheeks tinged in red , and his expression somewhat tells me he's contemplating on something . He was travelling along with his dad .

帅小子和爸爸正走着，发现我的相机对着他。 他装作没看见，好像正关注着别的事。 可是他的小脸变红了。

"Say : Ni Hao , little bird ! " ---- I watched this scene in Jingshan Park . People do all kinds of hobbies in public parks . Some sing, some make music, some dance or make tai-chi . In China it is also very common to bring birds to the park . The small boy tries to teach the beo to say : "Ni hao".

“小鸟，说你好！”---- 景山公园一景。 中国人多在公园里享受各自的业余爱好，唱歌的、奏乐的、跳舞的、练太极的等等，不一而足，去公园遛鸟也很普遍。 这个小男孩想教八哥说“你好”。

Summer Palace . ---- The Summer Palace in Beijing has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth . Great gardens , amazing structures and a rather large lake make up the Summer Palace . Constructed in the Jin Dynasty (1115-1234) , the palace was extended continuously . By the time of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), it had become a luxurious royal garden providing royal families with rest and entertainment . Originally called 'Qingyi Garden' (Garden of Clear Ripples) , it was know as one of the famous 'three hills and five gardens' (Longevity Hill , Jade Spring Mountain , and Fragrant Hill , Garden of Clear Ripples , Garden of Everlasting Spring , Garden of Perfection and Brightness , Garden of Tranquility and Brightness , and Garden of Tranquility and Pleasure). Destroyed by fire , the Empress Dowager Cixi reconstruct it in 1888 , changing its name to Summer Palace (Yiheyuan). She spent most of her later years . After the success of the 1911 Revolution , it was opened to the public . UNESCO , which listed the palace on it's World Heritage List , declared the Summer Palace an "outstanding expression of the creative art of Chinese landscape garden design , incorporating the works of humankind and nature in a harmonious whole ."

“颐和园”---- 由宏大的园林、奇异的建筑和宽阔的湖水所组成的颐和园无疑是世界上最美丽的景观之一。 颐和园始建于金代（1115至1234），后经不断扩建，到清朝（1644至1911）时成为专供皇室休闲娱乐的豪华皇家园林。 颐和园原名“清漪园”，是北京著名的“三山五园”之一 （即：万寿山、玉泉山、香山； 畅春园、圆明园、静明园、静宜园及清漪园）。 1888年，修复被八国联军烧毁的部分后，慈禧太后将其更名为“颐和园”。她的晚年多在这里度过。1911年辛亥革命后对公众开放。

联合国教科文组织将颐和园列为世界文化遗产之一，称其为“中华园林艺术的杰出代表，是自然景色与人类才智的完美结合。”

The Evening Paper . ---- I enjoyed a full day at Behai Park . The evening was the best part--the crowds were gone and the real fun started . Tai Chi , feeding birds , singing , bands , dancing , calligraphy and more . Also , the weather was much cooler ! This man was reading the newspaper displayed in glass cases on the park wall at sunset . I loved his hat (something my own grandfather used to wear) and stance .

“晚报” ---- 我在北海公园逛了整整一天。 夕阳西下时的北海更加令人心旷神怡，络绎不绝的游客渐渐离去，晚风送来阵阵清凉，眼前呈现出另一幅祥和的景象：打太极的、遛鸟的、练嗓子的、玩乐器的、跳舞的、练书法的 ...... 图中人则正在读着报栏里的晚报。 我很喜欢他的帽子和神态，我爷爷过去也有一顶这样的帽子。

Mao better blues --- Another picture from Panjiayuan Antique Market ... There's nothing spectacular about this picture ... I like it because of the guy's funny pose and face and the fact that there was so much Mao everywhere !!! I guess this was his "angry" face when I said I'd buy one of those posters for US$ 1.5 !!!

毛不高兴了---- 这张潘家园的照片引我发笑的是，摊主的店铺摆满毛的画像，当我问他能不能1.5美元卖我一幅时，他立刻摆出这种不屑一顾的姿势和表情！

Beijing street ---- Walking around Beijing street , sometimes you would found this kind of people who was unemployed by factory and had to go out selling newspeper for earning some money to over new year.

A Long Day ---- This man is tired . He sells paintings and has his shop behind him . But the day was one of off and on rain . Thus he had to take his collection and move it inside and then out and back inside again and again . He had just placed them again outside when I took this photo ... as the first drop again begins to fall . His face tells it all .

“烦人的一天”---- 店主坐在他卖字画的小铺前，一脸的无奈。 这天的小雨时下时停，害得他不断地把字画搬出来又搬进去。我拍此片时他刚刚再次搬出那些字画，可是，又开始掉雨点儿了......

Smile . ---- For those who are following the growing theme of "The Ghost Market of Beijing", here is a wider view of the market's offering - even if it is about 1/50 of the expanse . Centered is a warm and great smile. Her stall area is just a small space behind her and has about 50 porcelain items big and small … a space competitor sits beside her. The smiler's stock has few antiques … but she is the painter artist for most of her wares , her husband the potter. She speaks almost no English but her smile needs little translation.

“笑脸”---- 熟悉潘家园“鬼市”的人都知道其面积已今非昔比，图中显示的场景仅是如今该市场总面积的五十分之一。 图中央可见一张动人的笑脸，背后是她那摆着五十余件大小瓷器的摊位。 她的身旁坐着一位同行。这些瓷器由该女人的丈夫制作，她则亲自绘制上面的图案。 该女人不会讲英语，其笑容的含义颇费揣摩。

Hot sweet potatoes . ---- In the cold of winter in Beijing China , on many street corners a vendor sells hot sweet potatoes (yams) like this one . They often sell fast as they are very popular all over China . One peals the potato like a banana . Sometime there is an uneaven cooked one as hot coals serve as the source for cooking and a vendor many not always rotate the potato . The blanket helps keep the potatoes from getting too cold on top . Sometimes a single corner can have five or six vendors . These are big potatoes . Really quite good and normally safe for eating . I am sure unsold potatoes are found on the coals the next day.

“烤白薯”---- 寒冷的冬天，北京许多街头拐角处都能看到卖烤白薯的小贩，有时一个街口甚至多达五六个。 这种大众食品很受人们的欢迎，人们常像吃香蕉一样剥开外面的皮来吃。 烤好的白薯都用毯子盖好以免变凉。 当然因为翻动的不均匀，有时难免会碰上一两个半生不熟的。 烤白薯个头儿很大很好吃，一般来讲也没有饮食卫生的顾虑，但我肯定那些毯子下面混有头天没卖完的。

" You'll only take one ？" ---- I love street food , and seeing all the interesting things that people sell . Don't know if I would want to buy one on the bottom , who knows the last time she had such low stock .

Violet romance . ---- This was Christmas eve in Beijing by the Houhai lake. Although it's not a public holiday, most young couples would still go out for a meal on this special occasion .
